A frequent wildflower of wet hammocks, tidal marshes and pond margins throughout much of Florida. The range includes the eastern United States west into Texas to Nebraska, north into Minnesota to Michigan, northeast into New York and Massachusetts.
A perennial herb with pubescent stems from 0.5-1.8m (20 in. to 6 ft.) tall. Leaves are opposite, not succulent, simple with serrate margins and with obvious petioles over 5mm (2/10 in.) long. The inflorescence is a flat-topped corymb made up of small white flowers lacking ray petals. Each head is about 6-7mm (1/4 in.) tall and made up of 9 to 15 disk florets with corollas 2.5-3mm (<1/8 in.) across. The fruit is a resinous-glandular achene with the pappus a tuft of white bristles.
