A frequent plant of flatwoods and bogs in most of Florida, absent from the southeast peninsula and the Keys. The range extends throughout the eastern United States west into Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.
This is a perennial herb with a solid hairy stem growing up to 1m (3 ft.) tall and opposite leaves. The leaves are ovate with toothed margins, reduced above and sessile or nearly sessile. The numerous small white flowers have tubular florets lacking rays and appear at the top of opposite branches. The outer bracts have gold-colored dots.
