These dragonflies are found around ponds and lakes and occasionally in spring runs in most of Florida except for the Big Bend and the Keys. The range extends through much of the southeastern coastal plain from Louisiana into Maryland.
Males are red overall, including having red veins along the front edge of the wings and towards the body. There may sometimes be an amber or black area at the base of the hindwings. Juvenile males have yellow markings on the face and body. Females are similar to juveniles, retaining yellow on the face and wing veins, but with red abdominal markings.
Celithemis bertha is a member of the Libellulidae - Skimmers family.
