Preferring quiet water with a muck bottom, including rivers in and near forests, may also be found around sand bottomed lakes with forested shores throughout Florida. The range extends throughout the eastern United States, west into Texas to Kansas, and north into Wisconsin, Michigan and southeast Canada.
Juveniles have a brown face and a small dark triangular marking below the side of the thorax at the base of the forewing. The pale area on the side of the thorax resembles a wolf head and the abdomen is yellow with a black dorsal stripe. Black basal wing streaks are absent from males and some females. Juveniles and females have reddish-brown eyes, and mature females abdomens may become brown or slightly pruinoise blue. Mature males have a black face, dark brown eyes and a pruinose body that may be nearly black.
