A dragonfly that is very similar to slaty and great blue skimmers. The range extends throughout the southeast, west into Arkansas and southeast Texas, north into Kentucky and West Virginia and up the Atlantic coastal states into Massachusetts.
The wing markings of bar-winged skimmers include a black streak near the base of the wings with dark wingtips, and alternating clear and dark areas along the leading edge of the wings. Males have a small white patch at the base of the hindwings.
