A

a. without a stem, or having a stem that is so short that the leaves all appear basal; note that there may be a peduncle, or scape resembling a leafless stem

n. a small, dry fruit that remains closed at maturity, having a single chamber with one seed attached at a single point; an unshelled sunflower seed is an achene
