Epiphytic plant of cypress swamps and hammocks throughout much of central and south Florida. Can be found either high or low on trees, growing larger in the shade and more compact in the open.
Most Florida plants of this species are of the variety densispica. Two other varieties are rare and found in only a few mostly south Florida counties.
The leaves are usually stiff and erect-ascending with a keel-like longitudinal line on the lower surface. The flower color varies among the different varieties, from green to red and rarely white.
