A common bramble of dry open hammocks throughout much of Florida. The range extends throughout the southeastern states, west into Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, and north into Missouri, Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
This species characterized in FLorida by having a prostrate or trailing form and having peduncles that are armed.
