Occasionally found on shell middens, coastal hammocks and other disturbed sites of the Florida peninsula. Also occurs in Louisiana, Texas and Arizona. The range extends through Mexico, Central America and mostly northern areas of South America, plus the Caribbean.
Bird peppers (C. annuum var. glabriusculum) have a single nearly spherical to elliptic shaped fruit per node. The fruit is about 1cm (4/10 in.) long. The plant is multi-branched and the leaves are entire.
The many varieties of the species Capsicum annuum include most of the culinary peppers, from sweet to spicy-hot.
