A rare plant of disturbed sites in Florida has been found to have escaped cultivation in Escambia, Alachua and Manatee Counties. Native to the central and western United States and much of Canada.
This scrubby aster is a rhizomatous perennial growing from 0.3-1m (1 to 3 ft.) tall. The linear leaves may be entire, roughly toothed or lobed less than half the width. The stems and leaves are covered with woolly white or gray hairs. The inflorescence is a nodding head of flowers appearing at the top of the stem. Each flower is a yellow disk 0.5cm (<1/4 in.) in diameter surrounded by a cup of hairy phyllaries.
Artemisia is derived from the greek word Artemis which means goddess. The specific name ludoviciana is the Latinized form of Louisiana.
Artemisia ludoviciana is a member of the Asteraceae - Aster family.
