An occasional shrub of disturbed sites in central and south Florida. Native to the West Indies. Also found in Mexico, India and southeast Asia.
This erect evergreen shrub has many long, leafy branches. The alternate leaves are simple, entire, smooth and ovate-lanceolate in shape. Flowers are in clusters branching off of a long peduncle above a leaf-like bract. Flowers are white, tubular flaring into five petals that recurve back under themselves when fully open. Fruit is a nearly globular black berry.
Cestrum diurnum is a member of the Solanaceae - Potato family.
