A frequent shrub of salt marshes and coastal strands throughout most of Florida's coastal counties. The range extends along the United States Gulf and Atlantic coasts from Texas to Maine, plus Nova Scotia.
Iva frutescens grows as tall as 3.5m (11-1/2 ft.). The simple lanceolate to long-elliptic leaves are mostly opposite except for those nearest the tips of the branches. Leaves are 4-10cm (1-1/2 to 4 in.) long, somewhat succulent and fleshy with at least some of the margin serrately toothed. The small globular flowers are in terminal racemes.
