A common rush of wet prairies, ditches and pond margins throughout nearly all of Florida. The range includes the southeastern coastal states from Texas into Maryland.
A perennial growing from 3-11dm (12 to 43 in.) tall with cylindrical culms that taper upwards. May have 1 or no basal leaves and 2 to 3 stem leaves. The inflorescences are spherical, 8-12 mm (~1/2 to 1/2 in.) in diameter and may be single or in panicles of many heads. The flowers have unequal length tepals that are straw-colored to reddish-brown.
