In the Western Hemisphere red admirals range from northern Canada, throughout the United States and Mexico and as far south as Guatemala. In Florida they are usually found in hammocks, marshes, swamps and along canals.
Favored host plants are herbs in the nettle (Urticaceae) family, particlularly false nettle (Boehmeria cylindrica), burning nettle (Urtica urens) and pellitory (Parietaria floridana).
