This is a common pine tree of flatwoods throughout nearly all of Florida. The range extends into the southeastern coastal states from Texas into North Carolina.
The needle leaves of slash pines are longer than 13cm (5 in.) with leaf sheaths less than 1.5cm (6/10 in.) long. The needles are in fascicles of 2 and 3. The cones are 7-16cm (2-3/4 to 6-1/4 in.) long and are stalked (have petioles).
