A common orchid of marshes, pond margins and wet ditches throughout much of Florida. The range includes the southeastern coastal states from North Carolina into Texas, plus Oklahoma and Arkansas. Also in Puerto Rico.
These orchids may be aquatic or terrestrial and grow up to 50cm (20 in.) tall with only cauline(on the stem) leaves. Leaves typically number from three to eight and are yellowish-green, linear-lanceolate, 3-20cm (1-3/16 to nearly 8 in.) long and 1-2.5cm (up to 1 in.) wide. From 10 to 50 flowers appear in a dense terminal raceme. Flowers have a greenish-white petal on each side, each deeply divided into two. The lip is deeply divided into three narrow lobes with the center one shorter than the others. The sepals are light green and the slender spur is about 13mm long.
