A common wildflower of coastal strands, salt marshes and mangrove swamps in nearly every coastal Florida county. The range extends from Texas to Maryland.
Bushy seaside oxeye is a perennial branched shrub that forms large colonies from rhizomes. The plant is overall grayish-green growing to 1m (~ 3ft.) tall or more and somewhat woody at the base. The opposite leaves are spatulate to lanceolate, somewhat fleshy with grayish hairs. The usually solitary flowers are long stalked with both the ray and disk florets yellow.
The genus Borrichia is named for Danish scientist, physician and teacher Ole Borch who latinized his name to Olaus Borrichius.
B. frutescens is the only species of this genus in most of Florida. In Miami-Dade County and the keys, there are also the rare B. rborescens (tree seaside oxeye) and a hybrid of the two species called Borrichia x cubana.
Borrichia frutescens is a member of the Asteraceae - Aster family.
