These lady beetles are slightly oval and highly convex with yellowish-orange to red elytra with black markings. All members of this species have two black spots on the rear and are often joined by a black band spanning the suture near the apex of the elytra. Some individuals may have an additional black spot on each elytra. The Florida subspecies have black faces, pronotum and legs.
Children's lady beetles feed on aphids and scale insects.
There are two subspecies of Exochomus childreni. E. childreni childreni is limited to the Florida peninsula. The other subspecies E. childreni guexi is found in Texas and Mexico.
This species is named in honor of John George Children (1777-1852) a Britsh chemist, mineralogist and zoologist. He was also a distinguished member and founding president of the Entomological Society of London which later became the Royal Entomological Society.
Exochomus childreni is a member of the Coccinellidae - Ladybugs, Ladybirds, Lady Beetles family.
