These flies range throughout the eastern United States, west to California and south into South America.
These tiny flies are 6.2-12.4mm (1/4 to 1/2 in.) long with a wingspan of 4.9-8.8mm (3/16 to almost 3/8 in.). The face is yellow with a central vertical black line. Dioprosopa clavata has a yellow scutellum that may appear banded. In several otherwise similar genera of flies the scutellum is all black. The four-speckled hover fly also has wings with a brown leading edge and extending into the middle of the wing along the base of cells R1 & R2+3.
The larvae feed on aphids, and appear to be particularly fond of Aphis nerii, oleander aphids.
The fly shown here was photographed on doctorbush (Plumbago zeylanica) flowers.
