Rascal dart moths can be found throughout Florida. The range is mainly across the southern states from North Carolina west into Arizona, plus Mexico.
Agrotis malefida has a wingspan of 4-4.5cm (1-1/2 to 1-3/4 in.). The forewings are browninsh in males and gray to blackish in females. The hindwings are nearly all pure white with some grayish-brown along the outer margins. The reniform spot is fairly distinct and the claviform spot is solid black and somewhat triangular-shaped.
The larvae are maily called palesided cutworms and they feed on a variety of wild and cultivated plants including the Fabaceae (pea) and Solanaceae (potato) families.
Agrotis malefida is a member of the Noctuidae - Owlet Moths family.
