This winter visitor to Florida as far south as the central peninsula can often be seen in ponds, marshes and farmlands. The winter range includes most of the southern United States. Canada geese breed across most of Canada and the northernmost United States. During migration they can be seen almost anywhere in between.
This is the largest goose in North America that can also vary in size to nearly the same as the smaller species. The distinctive black neck and head with the white chinstrap shaped cheeks makes this an easy bird to identify. The body is mostly brownish with a tan to brown breast, lighter on the sides on the lower neck. A white rump is plainly visible when in the water. In flight a white "U" can be seen on the upperside of the black tail.
Branta canadensis is a member of the Anatidae - Ducks, Geese and Swans family.
