An occasional shrub or small tree of shell middens, coastal hammocks and pinelands limited to the central and southern Florida peninsula.
Similar to sweet acacia (Vachellia farnesiana var. farnesiana) but usually only 1-2m (3-6 ft.) tall with leaflets 3mm (1/8 in.) or shorter and flower clusters not larger than 1 cm in diameter. The fruit has a pointed and curved tip. The zig-zag branches have spinescent stipules, alternate bipannate leaves with three to four pairs of pinnae and galbrous or only finely pubescent petiole and leaf rachis.
When in the genus Acacia this was considered a separate species, but is now listed as the pinetorum subspecies of Vachellia farnesiana.

Vachellia farnesiana is a member of the Fabaceae - Pea family.
