Not frequently found in Florida, but more likely in the southern peninsula in quiet waters of ditches, sloughs, lakes, ponds and stagnant streams. The range includes much of the United States west into California, north to Minnesota and northeast into Rhode Island. Also occurs in Cuba, other parts of the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America, plus Venuzuela.
Very similar in appearance to Carolina saddlebags. Red saddlebags are most easily distinguished by having a clear patch in the dark 'saddlebags". Also the black at the tip of the abdomen tends to remain mainly on top. Females have light-brown to pale orange bodies with lighter eyes that are white and brown. Males have red bodies.
Tramea onusta is a member of the Libellulidae - Skimmers family.
