In Florida, this perennial is only known to occur in Jackson County. The range of common cinquefoil ranges throughout eastern North America, west into Texas to Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota, and north into Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland.
The leaves are palmately divided into five toothed leaflets. The five petaled yellow flowers grow on stalks from the leaf axils, with the first bloom arising from the second leaf. The stem initially grows erect, then reclines, becoming prostrate after flowering and often rooting.
Potentilla simplex is a member of the Rosaceae - Rose family.
