A locally frequent orchid of flatwoods in parts of the Florida peninsula and the central panhandle. Also ranging in coastal counties from Louisiana into North Carolina.
A terrestrial orchid that grows from 15 to 30cm (6-12 in.) tall with only one or two linear leaves that are less than the height of the plant. From five to fifteen flowers may be open simultaneously. The flowers are typically a bright magenta-pink with a golden crest on the lip, which is above the column in this genus. There is also a form of this species where the flowers are white.
This species is only found blooming after the habitat has burned and is considered a globally imperiled species.
