Wild coco is found in cypress and hardwood swamps, marshes, wet flatwoods and wet disturbed sites thoughout central and south Florida. Eulophia alta is the only species out of over 200 of this pantropical genus that occurs in Florida.
This terrestrial orchid is one of the largest and showiest in Florida, growing from 50-150 cm tall. It has four to six yellow-green lanceolate leaves up to 100 by 10 cm in size and a loose raceme of 20 to 50 flowers. These bloom for a long period of time between August and December and they can be highly variable in color, from pale to deep burgundy.
