Although the most common vanilla in the state, it is limited in this country to Collier County, Florida. The range also extends through the West Indies. This is a high-climbing plant, growing in a distinctive zig-zag pattern on a variety of trees in swamps. Like many of this genus, V. phaeantha often starts as a terrestial plant, then the base rots away and it continues living as an epiphytic. Leafy vanilla flowers open at night and close by midday from April through July.
