Found in swamps and hammocks of south Florida, this epiphytic's range includes Puerto Rico and other West Indies islands, Mexico, Central America and northern South America.
Flowering mostly from July to January, this is the largest-flowered and most distinctive of the Epidendrum species in Florida. E. nocturnum is self-pollinating, resulting in many flowers being fertilized before fully opening. This situation causes the flowers to appear as though they were most showy the day before or will be the day after, and may be the case in these photos of the night-scented orchid.
