A spiny plant found in moist disturbed sites throughout most of the peninsula and a few central panhandle counties of Florida and also in the southeastern coastal states from Texas to North Carolina except Georgia. This native soda apple has red fruit when mature. The invasive tropical soda apple - S. viarum - has fruit that is mottled green, turning yellow when mature.
