An occasional shrub of swamps and wet hammocks - often near springs and spring runs - in the peninsula from Duval to Polk Counties, also found in Leon and Madison Counties and scattered locations of the coastal plain from Georgia into North Carolina.
This evergreen shrub with arching or leaning branches may grow to around 4m (13 ft.) tall. The alternate leaves are bright green, simple with entire or serrate margins. Leaves are lanceolate to ovate, 2.5-10cm (1-4 in.) long and 1-4cm (3/8 to 1-1/2 in.) wide. The showy urn-shaped flowers are white and appear in late spring in clusters from the leaf axils. The fruit is a rounded capsule 4-5mm long and 5-6mm wide (~3/16" in diameter).
Florida hobblebush - also called pipestem - makes an excellent landscape plant for shady moist areas.
Agarista populifolia is a member of the Ericaceae - Heath family.
