An occasional vine of calcerous hammocks, riverbanks and various woodlands from the central panhandle to the central peninsula. The range extends throughout the southeastern states west into Louisiana, Oklahoma and Kansas and north into Missouri, Kentucky and Virginia.
A herbaceous vine that frequently scrambles over other vegetation and into trees, older stems lower on the plant are woody and shed in long strips. The pinately compound leaves are opposite with five leaflets, any of which are sometimes divided into three parts. Leaflets are ovate, up to 6cm (2-1/3 in.) long and 4.5cm (1-3/4 in.) wide and may have toothed margins or be three-lobed. The white flowers grow from the leaf axils in showy clusters, appearing mainly in July and August. Flowers have four petal-like sepals and up to 35 pistils than grow to spread out in a globular cluster exceeding the length of the sepals. The fruit is an achene with white plumes, with up to 35 in each cluster which can be up to 5cm (~2 in.) wide.
