A frequent vine of sandhills and upland hammocks in north Florida and throughout the central peninsula. The range extends through the southeastern coastal states from Texas to South Carolina, plus Kentucky, Arkansas and Oklahoma.
The sprawling or climbing vines may be hairy or nearly glabrous. Leaves have from three to nine leaflets that are coarsely reticulate veined and the terminal leaflet being reduced and tenril-like. The urn-shaped flowers are solitary on a long peduncle arising from the leaf axils. The peduncle on this species has a pair of bracts. Petals are absent and the four sepals are typically bluish to reddish. Inside are many hairy stamens.
