A common wildflower of sandhills, dunes and disturbed sites throughout nearly all of Florida. The range extends through the southern and central states west into central California and northeast to New York and Massachusetts. Also found in Mexico north of Mexico City.
This herbaceous plant has a camphor-like odor and grows to 1m (~3 ft.) tall. The stems may be pubescent, rough and/or sticky. The leaves are alternate, less than 7.6cm (3 in.) long and elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate and may be irregularly toothed. The rays are yellow and the disks are yellow to yellow-orange.
Heterotheca subaxillaris is a member of the Asteraceae - Aster family.
