A frequent palmetto limited to the Florida peninsula, found mostly in scrub.
Scrub palmetto has an S-shaped trunk that most often remains underground. There are usually only five live fronds at any one time. Fronds have unarmed petioles 2.5-5.5dm (10 to 22 in.) long and are costapalmate - with the petiole extending into the frond. The leaf blades of Sabal etonia are triangular and V-shaped with the costa extending the length of the undivided portion of the frond, or nearly so. Frond has 20 to 50 segments 6.5dm (~ 2 ft.) long. Numerous small white flowers appear most abundantly after a fire. Fruit is a single-seeded bluish-black berry 1.1-1.5cm (~1/2 in.) in diameter.
