A frequent tree mainly of floodplain forests in much of Florida. The range extends across the southern United States and into Mexico. North into Illinois, Indiana and Ohio in the east and north west into Colorado, Idaho and Washington state.
A deciduous tree growing to 28m (92 ft.) tall with smooth gray bark frequently with corky outgrowths. Leaves are alternate, simple and lanceolate 3-15cm (1-3/16 to 6 in.) long and 1.5-6cm (6/10 to 2-1/3 in.) wide. The tiny flowers usually appear singly hanging from the leaf axils, although sometimes in small clusters. The fruit is round, fleshy and maturing to orange or red, 6-8mm (1/4 to 1/3 in.) in diameter.
