A frequent vine of coastal hammocks, shell mounds and dunes in the central and southern peninsula, also the central panhandle and Escambia County. The range extends across the southern United States from Georgia to Arizona and northward into Missouri and Kansas.
The alternate leaves of sorrelvine are thick and fleshy, somewhat succulent and may be tri-lobed or even tri-foliate with the leaflets coarsely toothed. Long unbranched tendrils appear opposite some of the leaves. The tiny cuplike flowers are in compound umbels and have four very short spreading petals that may be white, creamy-yellow, greenish or purplish. Fruit is a small egg-shaped berry, 6-8mm (~1/4 in.) long, initially green and maturing to bluish-black.
