An occasional large tree of mesic hammocks throughout the panhandle and north Florida down the peninsula into Pasco and Seminole Counties. The range includes most of the eastern United States west into the states bordering the west side of the Mississippi River, except Minnesota, Wisconsin, New Hampshire and Maine, plus Texas and Ontario.
Growing to about 50m (164 ft.) tall with alternate leaves having four to six pointed lobes and both the base and apex truncated giving a squarish appearance with both ends indented. The flowers are large tulip-shaped, yellowish-green with splotches of orange. The fruit is a cone-like tight aggregation of samaras (winged seeds).
Liriodendron tulipifera is a member of the Magnoliaceae - Magnolia family.
