A common pricklypear cactus of coastal strands, sandhills, scrub, mesic flatwoods and ruderal sites throughout most of the peninsula, but not Monroe County.
Until very recently, this species, along with several other species were all considered Opuntia humifusa, which is no longer recognized as occuring in Florida.
Opuntia austrina is a member of the Cactaceae - Cactus family.
