A common perennial of marshes and swamps in nearly all of Florida. The range extends throughout eastern North America, plus the southwestern states, Mexico, Central and South America, the West Indies and Bermuda,
Typically about 1m (3 ft.) tall, false nettle can reach 1.6m (5 ft.) in height. Leaves are opposite with petioles, lanceolate to ovate, with rough surfaces and toothed margins. The tiny petal-less flowers are in long, slander spikes. Typically plants have fewer staminate flowers than pistillate, but sometimes plants will have all of the same sex (dioecious). The male flowers have four each sepals and stamens. Female flowers can have from two to four sepals and one pistil.
