An occasional wildflower of sandhills and scrub in the northern and central peninsula, plus Martin, Palm Beach and Broward Counties.
Florida feathershank has a single leafless scape and 4-7 narrow basal leaves growing from a bulb. The scape is topped with a spike of widely spaced tiny flowers. The overall height of the plant may be from 66-122cm (26 - 48 in.). The spike of the inflorescence can have from 55 to 220 individual flowers. Leaves are 14-75cm (5-1/2 to 29-1/2 in.) long and 1.5-3.5mm (1/16 to 1/8 in.) wide. Flowers are globular, with green tepals that are usually elliptic to narrowly ovate 2-3.5mm (~1/8 in.) long, fleshy with entire margins. Filaments are awl-shaped, purple and 1.5 times the tepal length. There are 6 stamens. The fruit is a capsule containing from two to nine seeds.
