A frequent vine of coastal strands and beaches in much of the peninsula. The range extends along the Gulf Coast from Alabama into Texas.
This prostrate vine has alternate compound leaves with three oval shaped leaflets with entire margins. The flowers are pea-shaped, mostly pink to rose-purple in color with a two-lipped calyx. The fruit is a large flattened pod 10-15cm (4-6 in.) long. The seeds are hard, brown and darkly mottled.
Canavalia rosea is a member of the Fabaceae - Pea family.
