An ocassional biennial of beach dunes, coastal strands, sandhills and ruderal sites along the east coast of Florida south into Indian River County and inland from Lake and Sumter Counties north to the Suwannee RIver, plus the panhandle counties Leon, Jackson and Escambia. The range extends throughout the southeastern United States, north to Massachusetts and most of the states bordering the Great Lakes, west to Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
Growing to 1.5m (5ft.) tall, the pubescent stems have crowded alternate sessile leaves that are deeply divided (pinnatifid) nto ferny segments. The showy five-lobed red to orange flowers appear in elongated terminal inflorescences from summer into fall. The calyx is tubular and five-lobed. There are five stamens. The fruit is a capsule.
Ipomopsis rubra is a member of the Polemoniaceae - Phlox family.
