Florida native
A frequent woody herb of mostly disturbed sites thoughout much of Florida. The range extends throughout the southeastern United States north to Illinois, New York and Massachusetts, west to Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, plus Arizona and California. It is an introduced non-native species in Ontario.
Growing up to 3m (almost 10 ft.) tall with long pinnate leaves composed of many opposite pairs of oblong leaflets. The stems and leaves are smooth or nearly so, lacking long appressed hairs. The pea-shaped flowers are usually yellow but sometimes are purple-spotted. The corollas that are less than 3cm (1-1/8 in.) long. The fruit is a slender four-sided pod 15-20-cm (6-8 in.) long and 3-9mm (1/8 to 3/16 in.) wide containing numerous small seeds.
