A frequent vine of beaches, hammocks and disturbed sites throughout much of the peninsula and a few scattered panhandle counties. The range extends through the southeastern coastal states form Texas into Virginia, plus Pennsylvania.
Hairypod cowpea is a perennial trailing vine with glabrous stems. The large, bright yellow flowers are pea-shaped and 1.5 - 1.7cm (~5/8 in.) long. The calyx is two-lipped with sparse hairs. Fruit is a hairy pod 4-7cm (1-1/2 to 2-3/4 in.) long.
Vigna luteola is the only species of this genus that is native to Florida. Five other Vigna species occur in the state that are not native.
