An occasional low-growing plant of hammocks, shell mounds and ruderal sites in a few counties of Florida's north and central peninsula. Also found in South Carolina, Bermuda, much of the Caribbean and from Mexico to Brazil & Peru.
The leaves are alternate, ovate, toothed and hairy, growing on branching stems up to 2.75 m (9ft.) long. The five-petaled yellow, reddish or white flowers appear in the leaf axils from spring through fall. The calyx is five lobed with five hairy bracts below. Fruit is a spiny capsule.
Pavonia spinifex is a member of the Malvaceae - Mallow family.
