Florida native
A frequent plant of flatwoods, marshes, swamps and lake margins in most of the peninsula and scattered counties of north Florida into the central panhandle. The range extends throughout the southeastern states west into Texas and Oklahoma and north into Kentucky and Virginia.
This perennial has smooth four-angled stems to 1.5m (5ft.) tall. Lower leaves are opposite and the upper leaves are alternate. Leaves are lanceolate to 4cm (1.6 in.) long and reduced above. The flowers appear during the summer in the upper leaf axils and have six lavender to pale purple petals.
