Invasive exotics that have increased in abundance or frequency but have not yet altered Florida plant communities to the extent shown by Category I species.
Planting this species should be avoided and removal of existing plants may be desirable.
This South American native has escaped from cultivation and can occassionally be found in wet, disturbed hammocks in a number of counties throughout Florida. It also is now in two Georgia Counties and also Puerto Rico and Hawaii.
The leaves of wax begonia are glabrous.
Another South American begonia B. hirtella, or Brazilian Begonia is a rare plant of hammocks and disturbed sites in Miami-Dade County. Brazilian begonia has white-pubescent leaves.
Begonia cucullata is a member of the Begoniaceae - Begonia family.
