Achyra rantalis
Garden Webworm Moth
Florida native
Found in fields and gardens throughout Florida. The range includes most of the United States except for some of the northern Great Plains states. Also found in northeast and southern Canada, Mexico and the West Indies.
This very small moth has forewings with various shades of orange, brown and grayish-brown. The AM and PM lines are faint but slightly darker than the background color with the PM line more visible because it is edged in a paler color. Diffuse orbicular and reniform spots are usually visible. The hindwing is paler than the forewing. The garden webworm moth has a wingspan of 1.8-2.2cm (~3/4 in.).
The caterpillar is 2.4cm (nearly an inch) long with a yellowish-brown head and yellowish pale green to dark green body with lighter stripes down the back and three dark spots that form a triangle on the side of each abdominal segment. The larvae feed on various low-growing vegetable plants.
Achyra rantalis is a member of the Crambidae - Crambid Snout Moths family.
