These terrestrial crustaceans of the Old World can be found in yards and around houses throughout Florida. The range includes most of the United States, Mexico and Central America. Also found in parts of South America.
Growing up to 18mm (less than 3/4 in.) long, they have a dark grey coloring with minute yellow patches. The last abdominal segment (the telson) is trapezoidal-shaped.
Pillbugs roll up into a ball as a form of self-defense, prompting children to call them roly-poly bugs.
Armadillidium vulgare is a member of the Armadillidiidae - European Pillbugs family.
