A large distinctive beetle of deciduous and mixed forests and woodlands throughout the eastern United States, east of the Rocky Mountains and into southern Ontario and Quebec.
These beetles have an elongated body from 20-44mm (3/4 to 1-3/4 in.) long. The body is black overall with white markings. Two dark ovals framed in white on the pronotum form two prominent "false eyes". The dark elytra are striated and covered with silvery-whitish specks.
Alaus oculatus is a member of the Elateridae - Click Beetles family.
